Student Work Samples

Below you will see sample student work for standards based assignments that showcase tier 1 instruction through HMH Into Literature.

Literary Text: Analysis

Students read the horror story,  "The Monkey's Paw," and then watched a film version.  Students then  analyzed techniques that were used in the story and film and completed a chart to address NYS Next Generation Standard R7.

Informational Text: Summary 

Students read the Literary Criticism text, "What is the Horror Genre?" and then used the HMH anchor chart to guide their summaries of an informational text.  This addresses NYS Next Generation standard R2.

Incorporating Technology:  Google 

Students read an informational text, "Are Bionic Superhumans on the Horizon?"  Students then created google slide presentations that analyzed various aspects of the text.  This addressed numerous NYS Next Generation Standards such as  R3 and R4.

Incorporating Technology: Writeable

Students read "The Tell-Tale Heart" and were asked to analyze how suspense was shown in various parts of the story.  Students completed their work on the Writeable platform.  This  address numerous NYS Next Generation Standards such as  R3 and R1.

Published Writing: Argumentative

After reading the various texts within HMH's unit 2, students wrote argumentative essays on whether technology is harmful or helpful.  They used the writing process to plan, draft and publish their writing.  This met NYS Next Generation Standard W1.

Published Writing: Informational

After reading the various texts within HMH's  unit 4, students researched Abolitionists and wrote essays on the various ways they helped end slavery. They used the writing process to plan, draft and publish their writing.  This writing allowed them to meet NYS Next Generation Standards W2 and W6.
